“Ask the price when buying a car, ask the parents when marrying a wife.” This is a common saying among drivers in Vietnam. But do you know what the “on-the-road price” is? Don’t rush into buying a truck without understanding it clearly, otherwise, you might end up with unexpected expenses and regrets!

What is On-the-Road Price?

Simply put, the on-the-road price is the total amount you need to pay to have your truck ready to drive, from the factory to your doorstep.

Let’s break down the on-the-road price of a truck in detail:

Components of On-the-Road Price:

  • Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP): This is the base price announced by the manufacturer, like the price tag on the truck.
  • Registration Fee: This fee is like an “entry fee” for the truck to be registered under your ownership. The rate varies depending on the province or city. For example, in Hanoi, the registration fee for trucks is 2%, while in Ho Chi Minh City, it’s 10%.
  • License Plate Fee: The “ID card” of the vehicle, allowing it to be identified on the road.
  • Compulsory Third-Party Liability Insurance: Mandatory insurance to protect yourself financially in case of an accident.
  • Road Maintenance Fee: A fee for using the roads, like a “toll” for the truck to circulate.
  • Registration Service Fee: A fee for the agency that assists you in completing the vehicle registration process.
  • Other Costs: Accessories, comprehensive car insurance (optional), etc.

Example:

Let’s say you are interested in an Isuzu truck at a dealership in Long Bien District, Hanoi, with an MSRP of 500 million VND. The on-the-road price would be approximately: 500 million + (500 million x 2%) + 20 million (registration fee) + … = approximately 530 million VND.
