“Children are like buds on a branch,” needing care and protection. Yet, alarming videos of children driving vehicles circulate widely on social media. Are we inadvertently promoting danger and jeopardizing our children’s safety?

The 2020 incident of a 7-year-old boy in Hoc Mon District, Ho Chi Minh City, driving his family’s truck and causing an accident serves as a stark warning. The image of the truck swerving and crashing into the median on Truong Chinh Street sent chills down everyone’s spine. Fortunately, there were no casualties, but it raised concerns about the lack of supervision of children, especially around dangerous vehicles like trucks.
“Allowing children to drive trucks is like playing with fire,” said Nguyen Van A, a traffic safety expert at the Institute for Strategy and Traffic Safety. “Children lack the awareness and skills to handle unexpected situations on the road, easily leading to tragic accidents.”

According to Vietnam’s Road Traffic Law, children under 16 are not allowed to operate motor vehicles. Parents or guardians who permit or even encourage children to drive are violating the law and can face severe penalties and legal liability in case of accidents.
The issue of children driving is not just a wake-up call about parental responsibility in educating and protecting children but also a lesson for the community about road safety awareness. Don’t let a moment of “satisfaction” or “indulgence” put children at risk and cause pain to families and society.
1. At what age can children legally drive in Vietnam?
According to Vietnamese law, individuals must be 18 years old or older to be eligible for a driver’s license and legally operate a motor vehicle.
2. What are the penalties for allowing children to drive?
Depending on the severity of the violation and the consequences, violators can face fines ranging from several million to tens of millions of Vietnamese Dong, and even criminal prosecution if a serious accident occurs.
3. How can we raise road safety awareness among children?
Parents, schools, and society need to collaborate in educating children about road traffic laws from an early age through engaging and accessible methods like storytelling, drawing, and role-playing.
