“Fine feathers make fine birds; fine license plates make fine trucks.” This saying reflects the common desire among Vietnamese vehicle owners, especially truck owners, for a prestigious and memorable license plate. Many believe “lucky” plates bring good fortune and prosperity. But can you actually buy them? And what does the law say?
According to folklore, certain number sequences are considered “lucky,” such as 92 (Khanh Hoa province), often associated with prosperity (68, 86), or eternity (39, 79). Many believe owning such a plate brings good luck and business success. Mr. Nguyen Van A, a transport business owner in Ha Dong, shared, “I once randomly received a five-of-a-kind 8 license plate for my first truck. Since then, my business has flourished.”
However, many believe “lucky” plates are merely superstition. Mr. Tran Van B, a long-time truck driver in Cau Giay, said, “Driving carefully and conducting business with integrity is what matters. A fancy plate won’t help if you drive recklessly or treat customers poorly.”
Under current law, buying or selling license plates is strictly prohibited. Mr. Le Van C, an officer at the Hanoi Traffic Police Department, affirmed: “Buying lucky plates carries risks like fraud and counterfeit plates. This act is subject to severe penalties.”
Owning a suitable truck with a reasonable motorcycle registration fee is everyone’s desire. However, instead of focusing on “lucky” plates, prioritize choosing a truck that meets your needs, ensuring safety on the road and efficient business operations.
