Mr. Ba, a long-time truck driver in Hanoi, always took pride in his “lucky charm” truck. He said it provided for his family and allowed his children to receive a good education. But one day, after celebrating a friend’s new house in Hoai Duc district, Mr. Ba had a few too many drinks. On his way home to Nguyen Trai Street, Thanh Xuan district, he was stopped by the police for driving under the influence. His “lucky charm” truck was impounded, he was fined, and his driver’s license was suspended. The incident resulted in significant financial loss and inconvenience.
Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) measures the amount of alcohol in a person’s blood, calculated in milligrams per liter of breath or milligrams per 100 milliliters of blood. Alcohol, including beer and liquor, directly affects the nervous system, impairing concentration, slowing reflexes, and diminishing behavioral control. This is extremely dangerous when driving, as even a moment of inattention can lead to a tragic accident.
Traffic Accident
To ensure road safety, Vietnam has set a BAC limit of 0 mg/liter of breath or 0 mg/100ml of blood for drivers. This means that even consuming a small amount of alcohol can violate the law and result in severe penalties.
| BAC Level | Penalty (for Cars) | Fine |
|---|---|---|
| 0.05-0.24 | License Suspension (10-12 months) | 16-18 million VND |
| 0.25-0.39 | License Suspension (16-18 months) | 20-22 million VND |
| 0.4 and above | License Suspension (22-24 months), Imprisonment up to 2 years | 30-40 million VND |
Note: These penalties are for reference only and may vary depending on the specific circumstances and severity of the violation.
As mentioned above, the legal BAC limit for driving is 0. Therefore, to ensure your safety and the safety of others, you should never drink alcohol before driving.
This depends on how much alcohol you consumed and your individual metabolism. Alcohol takes time to be eliminated from the body. If you drank heavily the night before, you may still have alcohol in your system the next morning. It’s best to use a breathalyzer or wait until you are completely sober before driving.
There is no method to quickly sober up. Drinking coffee or taking a cold shower may temporarily make you feel more alert, but they do not eliminate alcohol from your body.
Police Officer Conducting a Breathalyzer Test
Mr. Nguyen Van A, a traffic expert at Hanoi University of Transport, stated: “Alcohol is one of the leading causes of traffic accidents in Vietnam. To minimize accidents, every citizen needs to raise awareness and never drink alcohol before driving.”
Be a responsible driver for your own safety and the safety of the community.
