“The basalt plateau, with its honest and gentle people…”. This familiar song not only depicts the beauty of the majestic Central Highlands but also evokes the image of hardworking, creative people who constantly strive for a better life. To support the ethnic minorities of the Central Highlands in their economic development and improve their living standards, the Vietnamese government has implemented numerous practical and effective support policies.
Recognizing the enormous agricultural potential of the Central Highlands, the government has focused on investing in infrastructure, transferring scientific and technical knowledge, and providing financial support to farmers. The National Target Program on New Rural Development has been vigorously implemented, bringing a new look to the Central Highlands. Local communities have access to high-yield crop varieties, livestock breeds, and advanced farming techniques, contributing to increased income and improved livelihoods.
Furthermore, policies supporting preferential loans and vocational training for rural laborers have also been prioritized. In his book “Economic Development Potential of the Central Highlands,” agricultural economist Nguyen Van An emphasizes: “Investing in the agriculture of the Central Highlands not only contributes to ensuring national food security but also serves as a driving force for socio-economic development for the entire region.”
Education and training have always been considered top national priorities by the Party and State. In the Central Highlands, the school system from preschool to high school has been invested in with modern facilities, meeting the educational needs of the children of ethnic minorities. Moreover, policies supporting ethnic minority students, such as tuition fee exemptions and reductions, scholarships, textbook support, and dormitory construction, have created favorable conditions for them to attend school and pursue education.
The Central Highlands is the cradle of Gong culture – a representative intangible cultural heritage of humanity. The government has implemented numerous policies to preserve and promote the traditional cultural values of the ethnic groups in the Central Highlands. Many traditional festivals have been restored and maintained regularly, such as the Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Festival, Elephant Racing Festival, and Burial Ceremony, attracting a large number of domestic and international tourists and contributing to tourism development.
The Central Highlands is a strategically important region for national security and defense. To maintain political security and social order and safety, the State has implemented comprehensive solutions: strengthening the armed forces, consolidating national defense and security in border areas, and promoting propaganda and mobilization of the masses to participate in protecting national security.
Ethnic policies in the Central Highlands are a clear testament to the Party and State’s concern for ethnic minorities. Timely and appropriate investments have yielded positive results, significantly contributing to socio-economic development and building an increasingly prosperous and civilized Central Highlands.
