The old Vietnamese proverb “Thương cho roi cho vọt, ghét cho ngọt cho bùi” (spare the rod, spoil the child; tough love is necessary) still holds true today. For workers, especially those who suffer workplace accidents, community support and government policies are crucial in helping them overcome difficulties and rebuild their lives.

The Difficult Journey: A Constant Worry for Workers

Mr. Ba, a long-time 3.5-ton truck driver in Hanoi, still vividly remembers his horrific workplace accident. While transporting goods to Hai Duong, he lost control of his vehicle due to slippery roads and suffered a severe leg injury. The sudden accident left him in constant pain and facing the possibility of permanent disability.

Mr. Ba’s story is not unique. Every year, countless workers across various industries, from construction workers and truck drivers to office employees, are at risk of workplace accidents. This constant worry impacts their lives, mental well-being, and their families.

A Strong Safety Net: Protecting Vietnamese Workers

Understanding the hardships faced by injured workers, the Vietnamese government has enacted workers’ compensation policies as a safety net to protect their rights. What does this policy entail?

Valuable Benefits: Comprehensive Support for Injured Workers

  1. Medical Treatment Support: Injured workers are entitled to comprehensive medical examination, treatment, and rehabilitation services at medical facilities nationwide, as stipulated by the Health Insurance Law and relevant legislation.

  2. Workers’ Compensation Benefits: Depending on the severity of the injury, workers receive benefits such as:

    • A lump-sum payment for the workplace accident.
    • Monthly allowances for the injured worker and those with reduced work capacity.
    • Funeral expenses and monthly survivor benefits for dependents of workers who die due to workplace accidents.
  3. Vocational Training and Job Placement Assistance: For workers with reduced work capacity, the policy also provides vocational training and facilitates job placement suitable to their post-accident abilities.

Eligibility Criteria: Who is Protected?

To be eligible for these benefits, workers must meet the following conditions:

  • Valid Labor Contract: Workers must have a legally binding labor contract with their employer.
  • Social Insurance Participation: Workers must participate in compulsory social insurance as mandated by law.
  • Accident Occurrence During Work: The accident must occur while the worker is performing their assigned duties under the employer’s direction.

The Road Ahead: Moving Forward with Confidence

Workers’ compensation serves as a strong foundation, helping to alleviate the burden on workers who experience unfortunate accidents. However, for the policy to be truly effective, it requires the collective efforts of the community and all levels of government.
