“Bamboo grows old, bamboo sprouts grow new” is a Vietnamese proverb highlighting the immutable laws of nature and human life. But have you ever wondered when the policy of sedentary farming and settlement, the foundation for a stable life and prosperous career, first appeared in Vietnam’s history? This seemingly simple question unveils fascinating insights into the nation’s journey of building and defending its sovereignty.

Delving into Vietnamese History

According to historian Le Van A (hypothetical), in his book “Historical Imprints” (hypothetical), the policy encouraging settlement and land reclamation dates back to the era of the Van Lang – Au Lac kingdom. The Hung Kings understood that a strong nation required prosperous people, and prosperity depended on access to land and stable settlements for production. Consequently, the policy of sedentary farming and settlement was considered a top national policy, a cornerstone of the country’s development.

However, this policy extended beyond the feudal period. Throughout various historical stages, from Chinese domination and independent feudal dynasties to the resistance wars against France and the United States, the policy was continuously adjusted and supplemented to suit contemporary circumstances.

For instance, during the resistance war against France, the policy Consequences of the Closed-Door Policy was implemented to relocate people from the lowlands to war zones, ensuring their safety and strengthening the resistance forces. Later, during the Doi Moi period, the policy focused on investing in socio-economic development in remote and mountainous areas, contributing to poverty reduction and improving the lives of ethnic minorities. Lessons from History: “Settle Down” to “Build a Career”

Throughout history, the policy of sedentary farming and settlement has played a crucial role in building and defending Vietnam. From prosperous villages along the Red River to peaceful hamlets in the majestic Central Highlands, the imprint of this humane policy is evident everywhere.

Today, as Vietnam integrates deeply into the global community, this policy requires even greater attention. Investing in infrastructure and socio-economic development in remote areas, enabling people to “settle down,” is essential for them to “build a career” and contribute to a stronger and more prosperous nation.
