Vietnam Traffic Signs: A Trucker’s Guide to Safe Driving

Indeed, traffic signs play a crucial role in regulating traffic and ensuring safety for all road users. Understanding the meaning of each sign is a prerequisite for responsible driving.

Vietnam’s Traffic Sign System

According to the 2008 Road Traffic Law and its guiding documents, Vietnam’s road traffic sign system is divided into four main groups:

1. Prohibition Signs

As the name suggests, this group indicates actions that are prohibited for road users. These signs are typically circular with a white background, red border, and black symbols or text.

For example, the “No Left Turn” sign is often placed at complex intersections to manage traffic flow and prevent congestion, especially during peak hours in inner-city streets like Xa Dan, Nguyen Trai, or the Cau Giay area.

2. Warning Signs

This group warns road users of potential hazards ahead, such as slippery roads or areas where children frequently cross. Most warning signs are equilateral triangles with a red border, yellow background, and black symbols.

For example, the “Railroad Crossing with Gates” sign is usually placed at railroad crossings, reminding truck drivers to slow down and observe carefully before proceeding.

3. Mandatory Signs

These signs require road users to obey specific instructions, such as “Keep Right” or “Stop at Stop Line.” This group is mainly characterized by circular shapes with a blue background and white symbols.
