“You’re not old enough yet, son!” – a familiar phrase many young people hear when expressing their desire to drive a car on the open road. So, what is the driving age limit in Vietnam? This article will provide you with the necessary information regarding this matter.

The “Golden” Age to Enter the World of Four Wheels

The Dream of Driving and Current Regulations

Each of us has dreamed of driving our own car, feeling the freedom and power on the road. However, Vietnam’s traffic laws clearly stipulate the age limit for operating vehicles participating in traffic to ensure the safety of both the driver and those around them.

Accordingly, the driving age limits in Vietnam are as follows:

  • 18 years old: The minimum age to be granted a driver’s license of category A1, allowing the operation of two-wheeled motorcycles with engine displacement from 50 cm3 to under 175 cm3.
  • 19 years old: The minimum age to be granted a driver’s license of category B1, allowing the operation of passenger cars, VAN trucks, trucks with a payload of under 1.5 tons, and vehicles carrying under 9 people (including the driver).
  • 21 years old: The minimum age to be granted a driver’s license of category C, allowing the operation of trucks with a payload of over 1.5 tons and vehicles carrying from 10 to 30 people.
  • 24 years old: The minimum age to be granted a driver’s license of category D, allowing the operation of vehicles carrying over 30 people.
  • 27 years old: The minimum age to be granted a driver’s license of category E, allowing the operation of vehicles towing trailers, semi-trailers, and container trucks.

Why Are There Age Restrictions?

Mr. Nguyen Van A, a traffic expert at the Institute of Road Traffic Safety, said: “The regulation of the minimum driving age is based on many factors, including the physical, psychological, cognitive development, and driving skills of the vehicle operator. Only at adulthood are people capable of controlling their behavior, handling situations flexibly, and ensuring safety when participating in traffic.”

“Tragicomic” Stories Due to Underage Driving

The story goes that Minh, a young man in Cau Giay district, Hanoi, just turned 17 and was eager to get a driver’s license to drive his family’s 1-ton truck. Minh secretly enrolled in driving school and practiced diligently every day. On the day of the driving test, Minh passed the theory and practical tests excellently. However, when submitting his application, Minh was disqualified because he did not meet the minimum driving age requirement.

Minh’s story is a lesson for many young people, reminding us to carefully study the traffic laws before participating in driving lessons and taking the driving test.
