“Uphill and downhill” – an old saying that describes the challenging and treacherous mountain roads that test the skills of any driver. Especially on winding mountain passes in northern Vietnam like Tam Dao (Vinh Phuc), Sapa (Lao Cai), or Ha Giang, mastering uphill driving techniques not only ensures the safety of you and your loved ones but also helps protect your vehicle, ensuring its durability on every journey.

Uphill Driving Techniques: Essential Knowledge

1. Preparation Before Uphill Driving

  • Vehicle Inspection: Before starting your journey, ensure your vehicle is thoroughly inspected, especially the brakes, tires, and engine.
  • Gear Selection: When starting your ascent, shift to a lower gear (1 or 2) to provide sufficient engine power.
  • Maintain a Safe Distance: Keep a safe distance from the vehicle ahead to allow ample space for unexpected situations.

2. Uphill Driving Techniques

  • Maintain a Steady Speed: Avoid sudden acceleration or deceleration while driving uphill. This helps maintain vehicle stability and fuel efficiency.
  • Check Your Mirrors: Regularly check your rearview mirrors to monitor traffic behind you and yield to other vehicles when necessary.
  • Use the Parking Brake When Needed: If stopping on a hill, engage the parking brake to prevent the vehicle from rolling backward.

3. Safe Downhill Driving

  • Shift to a Lower Gear: Similar to uphill driving, shifting to a lower gear when descending allows the engine to help with braking, reducing strain on the brake system.
  • Avoid Continuous Braking: Continuous braking while going downhill can cause the brakes to overheat, reducing their effectiveness. Instead, combine braking with engine braking.

Truck Uphill Driving Experience

With trucks, mastering uphill driving techniques is even more critical due to their heavy loads and large size. Mr. Nguyen Van A, a seasoned truck driver at ABC Transportation Company, shared: “Driving a truck uphill requires high concentration and flexible situational handling. The most important thing is to keep the vehicle stable, avoiding stalling or rolling backward.”
