“Stay in your lane” – a humorous saying with a serious message highlighting the importance of obeying traffic laws, especially parking regulations. Parking seems simple, but it carries hidden risks, particularly in bustling cities like Hanoi, where traffic density is consistently high. A careless maneuver or parking violation could result in a fine from traffic authorities, not to mention inconveniences for yourself and other road users.

So, what are the parking regulations in Hanoi? How can you park with peace of mind and avoid fines? This article provides essential information about Hanoi’s parking rules, empowering you to drive confidently on any road.

Understand the Rules for Confident Driving

Where and How to Park Correctly

According to the Road Traffic Law, there are three permissible scenarios for stopping a vehicle:

  • Stopping: Briefly halting the vehicle to perform a specific task (e.g., picking up/dropping off passengers, retrieving items). Stopping time should not exceed 5 minutes.
  • Parking: Stopping the vehicle and leaving it for a specific period, ranging from a few minutes to several hours.
  • Overnight Parking: Leaving the vehicle parked for an extended period, typically overnight.

So, where is parking permitted?

  • Designated Parking Areas: Observe traffic signs to identify permitted parking zones, vehicle types allowed (cars, trucks, buses), and permissible parking durations.
  • Areas Where Parking is Not Prohibited and Does Not Obstruct Traffic: Avoid parking in front of residential gates, shops, narrow roads, crowded areas, near traffic lights or signs.

Note:

  • When parking, ensure your vehicle is no more than 25cm from the curb or sidewalk.
  • Parking is strictly prohibited on bridges, under overpasses, in tunnels, on highways, and in bus lanes.

Penalties for Parking Violations

Illegal parking not only disrupts urban aesthetics and causes traffic congestion but also poses a risk of accidents. According to Decree 100/2019/NĐ-CP, fines for parking violations range from 400,000 VND to 800,000 VND depending on the severity of the infraction.

Mr. Nguyen Van A, a traffic expert at the Institute of Strategy and Transport Development, stated: “Increasing fines for parking violations is necessary to enhance public awareness and compliance with traffic laws, contributing to a safe and civilized traffic culture.”

To avoid fines, be mindful of parking regulations, carefully examine signs before parking, and choose appropriate locations.
