“Where can I park?” This seemingly simple question often leaves truck and van drivers in Hanoi frustrated. Limited sidewalk space, high parking demand, and increasingly strict parking regulations make finding a legal parking spot a challenge.
To avoid penalties, drivers must understand the legal regulations for parking on sidewalks. According to the 2008 Road Traffic Law and Decree 100/2019/ND-CP, parking on sidewalks is regulated as follows:
Penalties for sidewalk parking violations, as outlined in Decree 100/2019/ND-CP, can reach up to 7,000,000 VND and driver’s license suspension from 1 to 3 months.
According to traffic law expert Nguyen Van An, “Parking in alleys and narrow streets must also comply with traffic safety regulations. Parking that obstructs traffic or violates other regulations can still result in penalties.”
Overnight parking on sidewalks is subject to the same regulations as daytime parking. If there’s a “No Parking” sign, parking is prohibited, even at night.
