Uncle Ba, a familiar truck driver on Nguyen Trai Street, Thanh Xuan District, Hanoi, often reflects: “In the past, trucks were rare; only Mr. Tu’s family in the whole neighborhood owned one. Now, it’s different. Every family tries to buy one, making the roads much more crowded.” Uncle Ba’s story partly reflects the reality of the increasing car ownership rate in Vietnam, opening up many opportunities but also posing significant challenges.
According to statistics from the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMA), by the end of 2022, the car ownership rate in Vietnam reached approximately 23 cars per 1,000 people. While this figure is still low compared to other countries in the region like Thailand (200 cars per 1,000 people) or Malaysia (400 cars per 1,000 people), it indicates significant growth in recent years.
Economic growth and improved living standards are the main drivers of the booming automobile market. Besides, car manufacturers continuously launching diverse models with competitive prices, along with supportive policies from the Government, also contribute to promoting people’s demand for car purchases.

Challenges:
Increasing number of trucks in Vietnam
| Truck Type | Estimated Price |
|---|---|
| Light Truck | From 200 million VND |
| Medium Truck | From 500 million VND |
| Heavy Truck | From 1 billion VND |
Note: Prices may vary depending on the time, version, and distributor.
The car ownership rate in urban areas is significantly higher than in rural areas. For example, in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, this rate can reach up to 100 cars per 1,000 people.
The small, affordable car segment is the top choice of Vietnamese consumers.
The Government needs appropriate policies to control the number of vehicles in circulation, invest in developing public transport systems, and encourage people to use environmentally friendly means of transport.
